SEA RESCUE: COMPULSORY TAX FOR BOATERS... OR NOT?
Following the tragic sea rescue in France during storm Miguel, in which 3 volunteer sea rescuers died earlier this month, a person suggested at Parliament that boaters should pay a tax.
This is highly discussed through sea rescuers and boaters now, as they generally don't think that is a good idea.
Sea rescue is a beautiful volunteer association in France, and has always been funded both by government and by donations.
Because it has been funded this way, it is regarded very highly by everyone. Sea rescuers now fear that by being funded through compulsory tax, it might cause damage to the solidarity aspect of the association. It might also disengage fully the government which has already reduced it's help a few years ago.
What are your personal thoughts and how doesit work in your country?
